2010 QUILT EVENT REVIEW

Once again, a very successful Quilt Event – our sixteenth.  The weather just held out for us on Saturday.   About a thousand people came through the doors of the National Theatre and 1525  tickets were sold for the raffle.  It has been heartening to speak to visitors who found Sunday an exciting and satisfying day as well even though they missed the spectacle of the Saturday “Airing of the Quilts”.

The National Theatre once again housed an exceptional exhibition of quilts entered from far and wide.  Featured quilters were Robyn McPherson from Queanbeyan, Paull McKee from Canberra and Carol Ogilvie from Braidwood, together with the Quilters’ Guild of NSW Challenge, the Braidwood Quilt Shop Challenge and the Total Fabrications annual exhibition. Due to the fact that June’s recovery has been slow we asked Fiona Hammond to assist us with the exhibition design this year.  An interesting exercise for us after fifteen years with June at the helm. The great team of assistants rallied for Fiona as they did for June and the exhibition went up quickly and efficiently. Thank you Sandy, Marjorie, Erna, Cecily, Jenny, Claire and Carol. Beryl Kelly, Joan Faulkner, Cathy Pinchbeck and Gwen and Alan King did a stirling job looking after the Sale of Work Table   Wallace Street looked a picture on Saturday with a great display of quilts being “aired” and the only disappointment was that quilts needed to come down an hour or so early to avoid possible damage from a threatening storm.

Sadly this is the last year that Cheryl Hannah will be supporting our Event with her FyreGallery $1000 Acquisitive Award. I have written to Cheryl thanking her for her generosity over the past five years. The FyreGallery Award has raised the profile of our competitive section and I am endeavouring to arrange that we continue to offer a similar award, suggesting to prospective sponsors that the award may or may not be acquisitive.

All venues reported good attendance. New participant Miriam Miller and her proggy hooky rugs won many accolades from visitors and our policeman Richard Pearce was in his element taking on the role of tourism guide when he had the opportunity to chat about the life of Braidwood’s Court House, a first time venue and the imposing address for Miriam’s exhibition. Many thanks to Miriam and her students and friends for adding such a colourful and nostalgic element to the event this year.

Another never-before addition to this year’s event was the excellent display provided by the Vintage Sports Car of Australia.  Our thanks to Syd Reinhardt who approached us very early in 2010 and stuck to his plan through the rigours of dealing with the necessary paperwork required by our Council – some feat. I’m sure most of the quilters’ partners enjoyed the diversion of viewing some beautiful shiny and sparkly cars.

The Fringe Festival continued to provide more exhibition venues, gardens and markets – our thanks to Suzanne Bellamy, Fyre Gallery, St Andrews and St Bedes Churches, the former Material Arts Studio Gallery (138 Wallace Street), the CWA, Jenny Wallace at 6 Malone Street, Braidwood Fire Station, Masonic Lodge, Alex Rea at the Braidwood Times who provided a last minute venue for Jenny Burton, Saturday Markets, and Mona and St Omer (AOGS). Added to the exhibitions mentioned above The Quilt Event offered fifteen different venues and activities for our community and visitors to enjoy. Once again we need to thank the Braidwood Servicemen’s Club – this time for the generous use of their courtesy bus which enabled us to provide a day long loop service to ensure all our visitors and residents could get to all the venues easily.
