Quilt Event 2009

The fifteenth annual Braidwood Quilt Event and the iconic outdoor Airing of the Quilts lived up to expectations by providing a fitting end to another successful year for Braidwood Quilters Inc.

Once again a record number of quilts were exhibited over the weekend. Over 600 beautiful examples of the art of quilting were housed in fifteen venues, accompanied by complimentary exhibitions unique to the particular organisation participating in Braidwood’s flagship festival.

The Official Opening on Friday evening was an opportunity to introduce Lilli Roberts and her friends from the Taggerty/Buxton/Narbethong area of Victoria which was ravaged by bushfires in February 2009.  Braidwood Quilters Inc had established a very special supportive relationship in April, collecting quilting and craft materials for the women of this region who had lost everything in the Black Saturday fires.

The main two-day exhibition in the historic National Theatre included guest appearances by Total Fabrications’ skilled original dollmakers, Australia New Zealand Art Quilters’ 135 Journal Quilts, “What Tickles Your Fancy” challenge from the Quilters Guild of NSW, the Braidwood Quilt Shop Challenge “Black & White” and a collection of the BQI 2009 Workshop Community Quilts. The Braidwood Servicemen’s Club was host to a major retrospective exhibition of the work of the Canberra group tACTile entitled “Rewound: Transition from the 80s to the Present”.

Cheryl Hannah, Director of FyreGallery, was thrilled at the response to the $1000 Acquisitive Award offered for a quilt inspired by the work of Australian printmaker and artist Hall Thorpe and is proud to have in her collection the beautiful work of Denise Sargo from Connells Point, NSW.

Additional exhibitions and activities were held at St Bedes Catholic Church, St Andrews Anglican Church, the Masonic Lodge, the Braidwood Hospital, garden parties at Long Barn and 6 Malone Street, Material Arts Studio Gallery, CWA Rooms, Braidwood Fire Station, Ryrie Park Markets, The Old Cheese Factory, four open gardens auspiced by Australia’s Open Garden Scheme, Suzanne Bellamy’s Open Studio and Jenny Burton’s antique and vintage quilts at Riffs & Rants.  The drivers of the free loop bus earned their weight in gold transporting the hundreds of residents and visitors who attended this year’s event

A DOUBLE WEDDING RING FOR DAMIEN

This quilt was begun by our dear friend Lynne Harlow in Braidwood and the piecing was completed by Shirley Merriel of Sydney after Lynne’s death.

The machine quilting followed and this was done by Susan Campbell of Rowdey Flat Quilting, Yackandandah in Victoria. The quilt was finished in Canberra by Lynne’s friends

Two of Lynne’s friends delivered the quilt to Braidwood so that it could be exhibited during the Quilt Event
