JUNE WEATHERSTONE PRESENTED WITH LIFE MEMBERSHIP

November 1995 June Weatherstone created the concept of an Australian “Airing of the Quilts” based on the famous Outdoor Quilt Show in the town of Sisters in Oregon, USA. The first “Airing” consisted of a surprise hanging of 25 quilts from the first floor verandahs of Wallace Street’s 19th Century buildings and a small display of students quilts in the vacant Shop 5 of The Albion Centre. The day was the fourth Saturday in November.

On the fourth weekend of November 2009, fifteen years later, 600 quilts were displayed on Wallace Street buildings and in fifteen venues throughout Braidwood, the two major indoor exhibitions being housed in the National Theatre and the Servicemen’s Club. June has co-ordinated all of the fifteen annual Quilt Events and “Airing of the Quilts” and had designed and curated all the major indoor exhibitions.

But June felt it was time to take life a little more easily in the future and decided not to stand for the Presidency of Braidwood Quilters Inc. for 2010. At the Annual General Meeting held on February 10 June was granted Honorary Life Membership of the Association and thanked for her untiring commitment and guidance from 1995 through to 2010 including holding the position of President from 1997.

It is no surprise to her quilting colleagues that she did stand for the position of Vice-President which is just about the most perfect way to continue her relationship with the wonderful event which has put Braidwood on the map in so many ways.

Braidwood Quilters  Visit Violet Town

How busy Braidwood Quilters have been, since we signed off on another extremely successful Quilt Event and Airing of the Quilts last November, we have had a very successful visit to Violet Town in Victoria where we supported its first quilt airing.  We left Braidwood on Thursday March 11 and travelled for 6&1/2 hours, arriving in time for afternoon tea and then a wonderful dinner at Tanleigh Park where we were made so welcome by Barbie and Graham Everett.

We delivered 61 quilts to the Violet Town Community Hall before 10 am on Friday morning and then our chauffeur ferried us to Shepparton where we were able to view the Goulburn Valley Quilters exhibition in the RSL Club.  We met some very talented quilters there and promised to keep in touch.
