Our guest speaker is Eilleen Hayley

 Eileen Haley is a Sydney-based quilter, creative writer and public servant. Her quilt

'Dancing Women (Ireland)' received the award of 'Judge's favourite for no judgeable

reason' at the Braidwood Quilt Event 2010. Her poem sequence Full Circle was launched

during 'Women, Writing and Ideas' at Braidwood in 2007.

Eileen believes that quilting is right up there with knitting as a magic craft, an

expression of women's creative, transformative, comforting and blessing powers. She is

proud to continue in a tradition enriched by many generations of (mainly) women, and which

includes:

  • the makers of the waggas, the Australian quilts made out of flour sacks,

suiting samples and other such during the depression times of the 1890s and 1920s;

  • the arpilleristas of Chile, who sewed their grief and their protests into their

patchworks during the Pinochet regime; and

  • Afro-American quilters, who were sometimes the only craftspeople who continued

making things of beauty in communities that were brutally oppressed by racism.
